Quick answer

Learn each new word inside a phrase and a sentence from your own life, say it aloud, review it at spaced times, and use it in the same week. Do not study words alone.

Why new words disappear

You learn a word on Monday, and by Friday it is gone. This is normal. It does not mean you are bad at English. A word usually stays when you meet it more than once, use it yourself, and connect it to something you already know. This article gives you ten easy ways to do that. Each one has example sentences and a short note.

Before you start: choose useful words

Do not try to learn every new word you see. Choose words you need in your own life: at work, at home, or when you travel. A small list of useful words is better than a long list you forget. Ask yourself: will I use this word this week? If the answer is yes, write it down.

Ten ways to remember new words

1. Learn the word inside a phrase

Meaning: do not study a word alone. Learn it with the words that usually come with it.

  • I make a decision every morning.
  • She does her homework after dinner.

Usage note: many learners say I did a decision. The correct phrase is make a decision, because make goes with decision.

2. Write your own sentence

Meaning: a sentence about your life is easier to remember than a sentence from a book.

  • My brother is very generous.
  • I am nervous before every test.

Usage note: keep your sentence short and correct. Do not add words you do not know yet.

3. Use word cards and spaced review

Meaning: write the word on one side of a card and a sentence or picture on the other side. Review it after one day, then after a few days, then after a week.

  • Front: borrow. Back: Can I borrow your pen?
  • Front: lend. Back: I can lend you my book.

Usage note: do not write only the Arabic translation. The English sentence shows you how to use the word.

4. Group words by topic

Meaning: words that belong together are easier to remember together, for example kitchen words or travel words.

  • In the kitchen, I use a knife, a fork, and a spoon.
  • At the airport, you show your passport and your ticket.

Usage note: keep each group small, about five to eight words.

5. Connect the word to a picture

Meaning: the brain remembers pictures well. Draw the word or find a photo for it.

  • The bridge is old and very long.
  • There is a small island in the sea.

Usage note: this works very well for things you can see. It helps less with words like however.

6. Say the word aloud

Meaning: when you say a word, you remember its sound and its shape together.

  • Say it three times: vegetable, vegetable, vegetable.
  • I want a comfortable chair.

Usage note: many English words are not said the way they are written. Listen to a speaking dictionary first, then repeat.

7. Learn the word family

Meaning: from one word you can learn several close words.

  • I work in a bank. My brother is a hard worker.
  • She teaches English. Her teacher is very kind.

Usage note: check the type of word: verb, noun, or adjective. Do not say He is a work. Say He is a worker.

8. Put labels on things at home

Meaning: write the English name on a small note and stick it on the object. You see it every day.

  • This is the fridge.
  • Please close the window.

Usage note: change the labels every week. After a while, you stop noticing old ones.

9. Learn the small facts with the word

Meaning: find out if a noun is countable or uncountable, and which preposition follows a verb.

  • She gave me some good advice.
  • It depends on the weather.

Usage note: advice is uncountable, so we do not say an advice or advices. We say depend on, not depend of.

10. Use the word in the same week

Meaning: real use is the best test. Write a message, talk to a friend, or record a voice note.

  • Yesterday I visited my cousin, and we discussed our plans.
  • I would like to practise my English with you.

Usage note: we say discuss something, not discuss about something. In British English the verb is practise; in American English people usually write practice for both the verb and the noun.

Common mistakes when learning vocabulary

Common mistake Correct form Reason
I did a mistake. I made a mistake. make a mistake is a fixed phrase
I need an advice. I need some advice. advice is uncountable
We discussed about the plan. We discussed the plan. discuss does not need a preposition
It depends of the price. It depends on the price. the preposition with depend is on
He said me the news. He told me the news. tell takes the person directly

Many of these mistakes come from translating word by word from Arabic. This is why methods 1 and 9 are so important: learn the word together with its grammar partner.

A simple weekly plan

You do not need a lot of time. Try these steps:

  1. Sunday: choose five words that are useful for you.
  2. Write one sentence about your life for each word.
  3. Make a card for each word and say each one aloud.
  4. Review the cards after one day and again after three days.
  5. At the end of the week, use the five words in a short message or a conversation.

How to review in a smart way

Spaced review means you come back to a word before you forget it completely. If you remember a word easily, wait longer before the next review. If you forget it, look at it again the next day. Keep difficult words in a separate pile. If you only remember the Arabic meaning, try to say the word in a full English sentence. This tests use, not just translation.

Take one small step today

No single method is right for everyone. Try two or three ways from this list for one week, then keep the ones that work for you. Repeating and using words matters more than the number of words. Choose one word today, write a sentence about your life with it, and say the sentence aloud.
